It's the End of the World As We Know It..

And I feel fine.

Well, I feel better than fine!  I feel great!  I've completed my first FULL pair of socks: Cotton Candy Socks!  Now I've knit lots of socks before, but I've never finished a pair.  That is to say, I've knit the 1st sock of every pair and then Second Sock Syndrome set in and I never knit the 2nd sock of the pair.  This time, I had no clue I was going to knit socks.  I went to Jo-Ann's to pick up some cheap sock yarn in various colorways for my Beekeeper's Quilt.  I picked up a skein of the Lion Brand Yarn Sock Ease in Cotton Candy Colorway and brought it home.  Before I knew what was happening, I was casting on a pair of vanilla (plain) socks (I used Magic Loop to knit these.).  I used Wendy D. Johnson's pattern, Toe-Up Socks with a Difference, which is the first time I've EVER knit toe-up socks.  I've only ever knit cuff-down socks.  And perhaps this is why the 2nd socks never got cast on.  With cuff-down socks, you have to pick up all of the gusset stitches.  You don't have to do any such fiddly thing with toe-up socks!  It was so FAST!  I literally knit these up in 1 afternoon and 1 morning.  (Of course, they are vanilla socks, so stockinette st socks are very fast and mindless.)

I am loving these socks!  -So much so, in fact, that I am wearing them right now even though they need to get their bath and be blocked on the sock blockers.  I was so thrilled that I finished a pair, that I joined Socktoberfest and challenged myself to make another pair of vanilla socks in the month of October.  - Perfectly doable goal, I should think.  I don't want to stress myself out and end up never knitting socks again.  But I do want to ride the wave of motivation brought on by the completed socks and knit another pair!

AND there's even more good news!  Since I made a relatively short pair of socks (a tad above ankle length), I have LOTS of yarn left over to knit hexipuffs!  YAY!

Knit on!

  1. Congratulations on completing your first pair of socks

  2. Woo hoo! I plan on knitting a pair of tube socks...no turning the heel and such. I thought that would be great first pair of sock idea.

  3. Jenn - Good idea! Can't wait to see them!!

  4. I just finished a pair of pedicure socks and am working on another. I hated it at first but I am slowly getting the hang of DPNs. These are for my daughter and her friend. I may even make a pair for myself when these are finished.

  5. BearyAnn - good for you!!! I'm not a DPN person. I like me some magic loop. Mainly because I lose things VERY easily. ;p

  6. Hello KnitPurlFriend.
This is the first time I've actually commented on your blog instead of Twitter. Good for you about the socks! I have enough sock yarn to last any 3 people a lifetime, and I have yet to knit a pair. I do want to make some pedi socks though (have Patons stretchy sock yarn for 6 pairs - yes, 6!). Someday...

BTW, what's this I hear about you reviewing and giving away Knitter's Pride goodies? I want to read that review. Really wish you could have come to VKLive LA. Would love to have met you. :)

  7. Angifitz - I am in the process of reviewing the Knitter's Pride Dreamz and Nova knitting needles -AND- the Dreamz and Aluminum Crochet hooks RIGHT NOW! I'm actually knitting and crocheting hexipuffs today with them to try them out. There will be a HUGE giveaway (courtesy of WEBS)here on my blog! Check back tomorrow!!! ;)

P.S. Wish I could've gone to VKLive too! It is always nice to meet peeps I tweet with!

  8. I haven't even attempted my first pair of socks yet. Big Kudos on finishing your first pair!

  9. Wow- if it really is that fast i am missing out! i'm too chicken to knit a toe-up pair, even though i have a whole book on the subject.

  10. what do you do with your singleton socks? My daughter never wears matching socks- the more thy clash the better! So, go ahead and wear them, all the cool tweens are doing it ;)
