If you've never had the pleasure of flipping through the pages of Knitter's Magazine, then you are truly missing out! Straight from the pages of Knitter's Mag comes The Great North American Afghan (Issues 50-55). The designers of the squares were given no restrictions other than the square size and border, so the squares are varied and creative! What I really love about this book is that since the squares are from different designers, they are of varied skill levels as well. As suggested in the book, newer knitters can actually get warmed up on the easier squares and then move on to the more difficult squares. And not only does the book provide you with detailed pattern information, but it also contains ideas, tips, and suggestions for personalizing your afghan by choosing your color palette, yarn, and afghan squares arrangement.
Each square gives a little information about the designer's pattern, what color was used, as well as the necessary yardage, gauge, and notions. Additionally, there are written instructions & charts and some even have both hand knit and knitting machine instructions! For squares that use special techniques, such as the i-cord used in the "Gitta Shrade" square, a full explanation of how to perform the technique is included with the pattern. The squares range from simple twisted stitches to embroidery to cable work to colorwork to textured stitches. Each square will be new and interesting.
I LOVE this afghan! I also love that since there are only 24 squares, that I could do 2 squares a month, and have a full-sized afghan in a year in my spare time! I also like the idea of creating numerous variations of the afghan by repeating or omitting squares. The possibilities are endless for personalization! I've been looking at different color combinations, trying to figure out which combo I like best for my decor. And since I'm an ADD knitter - knitting 1 square at a time will never get boring for me, which is a big BONUS!

Building on The Great North American Afghan, The Great American Kid's Afghan is also from the pages of Knitter's Magazine (Issues 56-59) and the squares are designed by the North American Knitters for their children and grandchildren!
This book has the same concept: squares of various patterns, techniques, and skill level that can be knit in any colorway and arranged in any order to completely personalize a kid's afghan! This book is chalk full of playful, fun, and textural squares - perfect for the kiddo in your life or as a gift! Some of the squares are even interactive! This afghan is the perfect size and only has 12 squares - so it could be done in a jif!
So nab a copy of each of these books - the square patterns alone are worth buying the book. I've already got visions of mix n match afghans. And what a portable project to take to knitting group! Just grab your square, yarn, pattern and go! Perfect!
